It might be. This might be the "long awaited" gold (and silver) smack down that everybody here on GIM is waiting and hoping for. :sarc:

Yes, andial, I amafraid the rally is over for good...

You better sell all your PM's while you can, and run to the safety of money market mutual funds, or juice your returns even more with the host of exiting CD's your friendly local banker is offering.

Yeah that hyper-inflation will be brutal. GIMers might need that $10 billion/oz gold to buy that $9.999 billion loaf of bread.

More likely with $10 billion/oz gold, loaf of bread would only cost $30 million...maybe only $15 million at Walmart. That's assumming of course that the gold/bread price ratio dosent change from its current approx 333 to 1 (Gold $1,000, Bread $3.00). Most likely gold/bread ratio will change in favor of gold.

The question you have to ask yourself is, if it goes down and then right back up in a "shakeout," when would you get back in?

Okay, I'll get serious. Here's the future for gold. We're bumping up against the top right now, just like stocks and commodities are doing. Can they go higher? Yes, somewhat but not another 30% or 50%. There's no psychology for it. All this "up" we've had is a counter trend rally. When stocks and commodities roll over so will gold. We're in a deflationary environment. Crappy paper is good in a deflationary environment. As deflation ends sometime around 2012 - 2015, trade your crappy paper for gold, stocks, commodities, and real estate.

Oh it's down .06% or $6.00.
Repeat nothing goes up in a straight line.
I'm hoping it goes down to to $980 to buy more.

Of course not. Which is why I remain firmly diversified:

10% Cash
15% PMs
20% Real Estate
55% Stock and Bonds

Those of you who disapprove of diversification because you are dead-sure confident of your analysis and predictions for the future, go ahead and place your bets, putting all you eggs in one basket (so to speak.)

Any of you who believe that diversification reduces overall risk may still think I've got my allocation wrong. Please remember that my stock dividends provide the income that, together with my social security check, enable me to live day to day. I myself am not completely happy with 55% of my wealth at the casino; but the fact remains that I need cash flow to buy the bacon.

Is gold at or near a medium term top. Goldfinger007 may think so; but I do not. For the moment, I'm holding my positions. In the fullness of time, we'll all see what happens. Isn't life exciting?

Give a man a stock position, and he'll eat bacon for a day. Give him a pig farm, and he'll eat bacon for a lifetime.

Only no one is actually giving out pig farms. Sell the stock, buy a farm, and invest in living.

:s1:

I'm not criticizing your diversification strategy. But it might not be a bad idea if some of the real estate portion of your investment included a working farm.

I'm actually in nearly complete agreement with what you say. The problem for me is that we're way too old to actually operate a farm ourselves and if we bought one we'd have the problem of locating a reliable tenant farmer or finding and hiring a farm manager and labor. All of that would be quite the challenge for two old men (75 and 65) who have absolutely no knowledge of or experience with raising pigs.

If I were in my 20s, 30s or even 40s, your suggestion would have huge appeal. In fact, several years ago we were actually scouting rural farmland around Keokuk, IA and Carthage, IL. But my buddy is in really poor health and needs to be around medical facilities and doctors, not out homesteading. Maybe in the next life?:36_3_16:

Edit> Actually, the point raised by silverblood and my response illustrate perfectly the need for people to tailor their investment strategies to fit their individual needs and circumstances. Different strokes for different folks was never more true.

I'm holding my positions too Merlin, and will add to them as I keep earning money - even though I think we're going much lower. Thus my amusement at the concern over it dropping $6.50.

Yes, life is exciting. :ok:

Good people, salt of the earth types, live around there. When I was a kid, we moved around a lot. But I've lived in Keokuk, Dallas City, Hamilton, and Montrose. I was actually born in La Harpe; they had a tiny hospital in those days. It's a small world, Ag_man.

Buy low, sell high. Good man. When it falls, it's on sale, buy. When it increases, buy a bit more, just in case it's going to continue to rise.

Let's all be honest and open. With gold and silver, you CAN'T GO WRONG. Buy whenever you can, and be confident that you've made the right decision.

I moved around a lot as a kid too. Lived in Keokuk, had friends in Hamilton as an adult. The only sketchy people I knew there were screws at the prison at Ft. Madison, the rest were salt of the earth, as you say.

It is a small world, Merlin.
